Plainfield High School
Varsity Swimming/Diving
Handbook
IHSAA Participation Eligibility Requirements
In accordance with the IHSAA, all athletes must have a current completed sport physical on file prior to the first practice. Athletes must maintain a passing grade in five classes. A complete list of rules/regulations is available in the PHS Athletic Office or you may go to the IHSAA website.
Communication
The majority of information will be communicated directly to the swimmer. A phone tree of the swimmers will be distributed early in the season. Last minute schedule changes will be communicated via this phone tree. Any parent-to-coach communication is best accomplished via the PHS e-mail or via the PHS voice mail system. Meet schedules will be posted on the PHS website and will be given to each swimmer.
Absences
In the event that a swimmer will be absent from practice or a meet, please contact the coach ASAP via e-mail or voice mail.
Snow Days/Delays
Practice and meet schedules may change in the event of a snow day or school delay. In accordance with IHSAA rules, scheduled athletic events are cancelled when school has been cancelled due to a weather emergency. Practice changes will be communicated via the phone tree.
Suits/Equipment
Each swimmer will need to provide their own practice suit, drag suit, water bottle, and goggles. Team swimsuits, warm-up jackets/pants, and a red mesh bag containing practice equipment will be provided by the school. These will be returned to the school at the end of the season.
Team Shirts/Dress Code
Team T-shirts will be ordered at the beginning of the season for a small fee. The dress code for team members on the days of scheduled meets will be determined by the upperclassmen and communicated to all swimmers. Traditional dress for out-of-town meets is nice pants with shirt and tie for the men and nice pants or skirt/dress for the ladies. T-shirts for family/friends supporting the team may, also, be available with ordering information coming at the beginning of the season. Remember that swimming is a winter sport and to wear hats, gloves, and warm coats to practices and meets!
Practices
Team practices consist of conditioning, weight lifting, and pool time. Morning practice is scheduled at PHS unless otherwise noted. Every attempt is made to follow the published schedule, but changes may occur. The phone tree will be utilized to communicate last minute changes.
Transportation
Transportation for out-of-town meets will be provided by school bus at Door # 7. All swimmers are strongly encouraged to ride the bus together as a team. In the event that a swimmer will be riding home with a parent, a written note must be given to the coach the day prior to the scheduled meet.
Transportation for practices is the responsibility of the swimmer. Carpools amongst the swimmers are encouraged. Parents may want to consider an occasional contribution of gas money to the volunteer drivers.
Directions to the out-of-town meets can be found on the PHS website.
Meet Volunteers
PHS Swimming would not exist without the generosity of our parent/family volunteers! Each home meet needs volunteers to time events, record results, operate electronic equipment, and assist with various miscellaneous duties. Sign-up opportunities will be available throughout the season. You do not need prior experience to participate! We will teach you!
Team Dinners/Breakfasts/Meet Snacks
Throughout the season, there may be various team meals scheduled. A parent volunteer sign-up sheet to host or to contribute food items will be circulated at the beginning of the season. Also, a schedule to provide meet snacks will be posted.
Fundraisers
The PHS Swim-A-Thon is held each year in December. Each swimmer is encouraged to solicit sponsors to pledge a monetary gift per lap swam during the event. A small percentage of the total funds collected are utilized for team equipment needs. The majority of the proceeds are given to a charitable organization determined by the team members.
Winter Sports Banquet
This dinner is held in the month of March at PHS. It begins by honoring all winter sports teams together, then, breaks into individual team groups for further recognition.
Sports letters, patches, and pins will be awarded at this time.
Support of Other PHS Teams
Periodically, the swimmers will be encouraged to attend and support other PHS sporting events as a team. These events will be communicated to the swimmer as previously addressed.
Encouragement/Support
Many types of encouragement have been planned over the years for the swimmers. Some ideas have included yard signs, posters, and boxes filled with inspirational messages. The upperclassmen parent leadership traditionally communicates the current season choices. You are encouraged to begin taking/saving photos for these fun activities.
